Movie Review: In 'Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die,' a man from the future fights an AI apocalypse

In Gore Verbinski's absurdist AI sci-fi satire"Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die,"a strange unnamed man (Sam Rockwell) steps into a Los Angeles diner and declares that he's from the future. "All of this is going to go horribly wrong," he says.

Norm's diner on La Cienega might not seem like the most likely battleground to decide the fate of the world, but that's exactly what this fellow — bearded, with a wreath of wires around his head and a bomb strapped under a translucent rain coat — contends.

He is there, while customers sip coffee and bite into an omelet, to enlist recruits for the resistance. In the future, he says, people have entirely stopped participating in life. "It all started with morning phone time," he says. In the enjoyably oddball, forebodingly bleak and ridiculously plausible "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die," a ragtag group fights a coming AI apocalypse across a handful of nondescript West Hollywood blocks.

It's been argued that with the onset of AI, storytellers need to get weirder, more imaginative, more human. The Daniels'"Everything Everywhere All at Once,"which likewise married cosmic and mundane, was animated partly in this spirit. "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die," scripted by Matthew Robinson, isn't that creative, and it grows more wayward the deeper it goes into its too-lengthy runtime. But there's a bonkers charm to how Verbinski tackles contemporary anxieties head on.

This is the first film in a decade from Verbinski, the director of "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Mouse Hunt" and one of the better animated features of the century, "Rango." But after a few flops ("The Lone Ranger,""A Cure for Wellness"), Verbinski cobbled together a more modest budget for this independent production.

The lack of scale is noticeable in the climatic moments of "Good Luck," but Verbinski's penchant for lush detail and movie-reference onslaught remains. Our central figure is a hobo prophet who looks straight out of Terry Gilliam's "The Fisher King," only more tech-enabled. He has a countdown on his watch, and the imminent attack on the diner means time is extremely short.

He's done this before, he says, 117 times, to be precise. His speech is well-rehearsed, but Rockwell's future man more resembles an actor who's been doing the same play for too long. His "Groundhog Day"-like time loop has drained him of optimism. He's left to desperately and cavalierly keep trying various combinations of recruits in the hope they survive, escape and do something that will prevent the AI apocalypse. It's a remarkably well-suited role for Rockwell, whose stumbling charm lifts "Good Luck" nearly as much as Johnny Depp did in "Pirates of the Caribbean."

"Good Luck" never quite matches the electricity of its diner-scene opening, but as a group forms, the movie ropes in other characters whose backstories make for fablelike flashbacks. They play like mini "Black Mirror" episodes.

One volunteer, a single mom named Susan (Juno Temple), is still mourning the death of her son from a school shooting, which in this reality has grown into such a common occurrence that scientists have developed clones to replace deceased children. The clones aren't quite right, though. They all say "Thank you for your service" and the cheaper ones come with ads. (This is the movie's darkest and best joke.)

Ingrid (Haley Lu Richardson) is allergic to phones and Wi-Fi. Her story includes a boyfriend who matches her in a technology-free life until a virtual reality headset leads him to drop out of real life, entirely. Also in the mix are a pair of high school teachers (Michael Peña) and Janet (Zazie Beetz) whose students never look up from their phones.

As in most sci-fi movies, the set up of "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is better than its follow through. But the movie has a kinetic kick, and you could argue that it's obsessed with the right things. We could usemore moviessimilarly engaged. Even if not every part of this particular mission is a success, like the numbers game of Rockwell's protagonist, eventually one will get through.

"Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die," a Briarcliff Entertainment release, is in theaters Friday. It's rated R by the Motion Picture Association for pervasive language, violence, some grisly images and brief sexual content. Running time: 134 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Nancy Guthrie was expected at friend's home, not church on day she vanished: source

A source close to the Guthrie family is pushing back on reports about howNancy Guthriewas discovered missing on Sunday, Feb. 1, saying key details of the timeline have been reported incorrectly.

Early reporting indicated that Nancy Guthrie had been scheduled to attend an in-person church service in Tucson that morning andwas reported missingafter she failed to show up. According to the family source, that account is not accurate.

The source told Fox News that for years — dating back to the COVID pandemic — Nancy and a small group of close friends had a standing Sunday routine that did not involve attending church in person. Instead, the group would gather at one another's homes to watch a New York–based church service via livestream.

The service was broadcast live from a New York church attended bySavannah Guthrie, the longtime "Today" show co-anchor and Nancy Guthrie's daughter.

According to the source, one of the friends contacted Annie — Nancy's daughter and Savannah Guthrie's sister — to report that Nancy had not shown up and could not be located.

The source emphasized that Nancy was never scheduled to attend a Tucson church service that day, contrary to some reports, and said the misunderstanding has led to confusion about the circumstances surrounding when she was first reported missing.

Savannah urged anyone with information to come forward as investigators worked against a looming deadline outlined in the note, which authorities have not publicly authenticated.

The final deadline outlined in the alleged ransom note passed Monday night without any proof of life or resolution.

Detroit Lions great Tracy Scroggins dies at 56; family suspects CTE

FormerDetroit Lionsdefender Tracy Scroggins has died at the age of 56, his family announced Feb. 9.

USA TODAY Sports

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Tracy Scroggins," his family said ina statement provided to TMZ.

"Tracy was a devoted father, cherished family member, and loyal friend whose life was marked by remarkable strength and perseverance. While many knew him for his career as a professional football player in the NFL, those closest to him knew him as a kind-hearted and generous man who cared deeply for his family and friends."

The family also said in its announcement of Scroggins' death that the 56-year-old had suffered symptoms suspected to be from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) during his post-playing career.

CTE is only diagnosable through a neuropathological autopsy performed after a person's death. It was not immediately clear whether Scroggins' family would have his brain tested.

"Playing in the NFL gave Tracy the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream and to rise from poverty," the statement read. "However, unfortunately, the NFL was also ultimately the cause of his untimely demise. Tracy spent every moment of retirement courageously battling the devastating effects of CTE. While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace."

Scroggins was one of nearly 5,000 players to file concussion-related lawsuits against the NFL before the league's sweeping concussion settlement in 2015.

Scroggins filed an additional claim against the NFL in 2016. His lawyer at the time – Tim Howard – stated his client was suffering from symptoms consistent with CTE.

"He can't remember where he is or where he's going,"Howard told USA TODAY Sports in 2016. "He hasn't been able to hold a job over the last six years. Beyond memory issues, he suffers from depression and has angry outbursts."

Scroggins was a defensive mainstay for Detroit

Scroggins played 10 NFL seasons, all for theLions, after being selected in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft. The Tulsa product played 142 games and made 89 starts while playing both defensive end and linebacker.

Scroggins racked up 60½ career sacks – seventh-most in franchise history – and was named the No. 90 player in the ranking of the greatest players franchise history bythe Free Pressin 2019.

Stephen Curry (knee) to miss All-Star Game

Two-time NBA All-Star game Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry will not compete in Sunday's annual showcase due to an ongoing injury to his right knee.

Field Level Media

Golden State coach Steve Kerr announced the news prior to the Warriors' game on Monday evening versus the Memphis Grizzlies.

Curry will not play vs. Memphis on Monday or San Antonio on Wednesday, missing his fourth and fifth consecutive games. He is suffering from patellofemoral pain syndrome, also known as runner's knee.

The Warriors are hopeful that Curry will return after the All-Star break when they host the Boston Celtics on Feb. 19.

"It's a matter of learning as I go what works rehab-wise," Curry told ESPN. "Because it's still painful. You have to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain. It's something we still have to monitor and injury-manage, but it's something where, if I come back too early, it could flare up."

Curry has missed 14 games to date, but is averaging 27.2 points per game, the fifth-highest per game total of his 17-year career.

He has not played since leaving a Jan. 30 home game vs. Detroit.

Curry joins the Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (abdomen) as All-Stars who will miss Sunday's game in Los Angeles. Gilgeous-Alexander has been replaced on the Team World roster by the Houston Rockets' center Alperen Sengun.

It was close.

It could've gone either way.

The second matchup between the Pitinos was much like the first one — a narrow St. John's victory that could have easily been won by Xavier.

Ultimately, the 17th-ranked Johnnies made enough plays Monday to survive, three days after their rousing victory over Connecticut.

"We were ready to play, but [Xavier] was terrific, and they were terrific at Xavier. Certain teams cause matchup problems for you, and this team does for us," coach Rick Pitino said after the Red Storm's grind-it-out, 87-82 overtime victory in front of 14,512 at the Garden. "But we came away twice in the latter stages of the games with a victory. I think that's a great thing for our team. I hope we don't play them in the Big East Tournament."

Bryce Hopkins of the St. John's Red Storm slams the ball during the first half against Xavier. Robert Sabo for NY Post

Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins came up big in overtime, after Oziyah Sellers shook off a poor shooting night by tipping in his own miss late in the regulation to force the extra session.

In those final five minutes, Ejiofor scored six of his game-high 25 points, Hopkins came up with two key steals and St. John's (19-5, 12-1) defense made critical stops and held Xavier (12-12, 4-9) star Tre Carroll without a field-goal attempt.

"That's what we said, he's not going to touch it, we're going to make their guards handle the basketball and take shots," Pitino said.

The elder Pitino improved to 5-1 against his son, Richard, and moved into third place on his own on the all-time wins list, surpassing Roy Williams.

It marked St. John's 10th consecutive win and moved them into a flat-footed tie atop the Big East with sixth-ranked UConn.

But the Hall of Fame coach wasn't thrilled with the performance.

Rick Pitino reacts from the sideline during the St. John's win against Xavier on Feb. 9. Robert Sabo for the NY Post

"Because I was not pleased with our defense tonight, I'm not really happy about 904. If we played better defense, I'd be much happier," he said. "Happy with the victory, but more proud of my son. In the two times we played them, he did things to really hurt our defense, did things to really hurt our press."

Xavier had St. John's on skates defensively for large portions of the evening.

They led by five deep into the second half, and were a defensive rebound away in the final seconds from pulling off the upset as a 16.5-point underdog.

But Hopkins got two key offensive rebounds with St. John's down two, Sellers got to his own miss to pull the Johnnies even and Carroll slipped and his heave at the horn wasn't close.

In overtime, Hopkins was terrific on the defensive end.

"When the game was on the line, really Bryce Hopkins won the game," Pitino said. "He made big plays for us on the defensive end, and he was outstanding in the final seven, eight minutes of the game."

Ejiofor had seven rebounds and five assists to go with his 25 points, Hopkins added 19 points and nine rebounds and Dylan Darling had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Carroll scored 21 for Xavier and Jovan Milicevic tallied 13.

Predictably, the atmosphere three days after the rousing Connecticut win was not nearly the same.

The crowd, decent in size, was quiet and the team wasn't sharp.

"It might've looked like we came out lacking a little bit of energy. But it wasn't like we were taking Xavier lightly," Darling said. "They took us down to the buzzer at their place, and we just went to OT with them tonight. We weren't taking them lightly. … We struggled, and we struggled guarding them."

Key Points -

Companies are pouring billions into AI hardware made by companies like Super Micro.

Super Micro's low valuation and a "picks and shovels" business model make it a compelling long-term pick.

10 stocks we like better than Super Micro Computer ›

Three years ago, OpenAI's ChatGPT introduced generative AI to the world. The technology has since grown to underpin a multi-billion-dollar industry, making chipmaker Nvidia the world's most valuable company.

That said, investors now face the challenges of finding overlooked AI stocks that haven't been caught up in the hype. Let's discuss three reasons why Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) could be a good long-term pick.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

Serious person looking at a computer screen.

1. The AI hardware opportunity looks resilient

As with any hyped-up new technology, there are growing fears that generative AI could be a bubble. This month, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published a report suggesting that only 5% of AI pilot programs deliver rapid revenue acceleration for corporate clients (the other 95% made little impact). But while this report spooked many investors, it's essential to look at the situation in its full context.

When a new technology is introduced, there will be a learning curve as companies and executives learn how to make it work or integrate it into their existing workflows. A similar challenge occurred with the internet in the early 2000s, and generative AI will probably be no exception.

Furthermore, as a hardware supplier, Super Micro operates on the "picks and shovels" side of AI -- selling computer servers and liquid cooling systems for data centers. This niche focus means its business can still succeed, even if the end clients don't profit. The stock allows investors to bet on AI as a whole without trying to pick winners in the increasingly competitive and uncertain software side of the industry.

2. The recent drop could be a good entry point

Super Micro's fourth-quarter earnings were weaker than expected. Revenue came in at $5.76 billion compared to analysts' expectations of $5.89 billion. And management cites operational challenges like tariffs, which could impact its globalized manufacturing supply chain.

That said, the situation isn't all bad. Investors should remember that Super Micro is still growing. In fact, its top line increased 8% compared to the prior year period, which means there is still healthy demand for its products. And while President Donald Trump's global trade war could be a near-term hit to margins, Super Micro aims to limit this challenge by boosting its U.S. manufacturing capabilities in California and potentially expanding to additional, lower-cost states like Mississippi and Texas.

3. Rock-bottom valuations

The final and biggest reason for investors to take a closer look at Super Micro is its low price tag. While the company clearly has some struggles, these are already priced into its valuation. Shares still trade at a whopping 64% discount to their all-time high of $118 reached in March 2024.

A big part of Super Micro's decline had to do with scandals involving delayed financial filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a now-discredited short-seller report that accused its management of accounting irregularities (in December, an independent special committee found no evidence of misconduct). But while these issues look resolved, some investors are still shying away from the equity.

With a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 17, Super Micro trades at a sharp discount to both the S&P 500 average of 23 and other AI hardware alternatives like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, which boast forward P/Es of 40 and 43, respectively. While the company doesn't have the economic moat or growth potential of a specialized chipmaker, it looks like a compelling value-oriented pick in an incredibly hyped up industry.
