Yahoo SportsAugust 15, 2025 at 8:28 PM

We are now just days away from kickoff of the college football season.

And since the season is so quickly approaching, what better way to get in the mood for the action than fighting over where teams should be ranked in preseason polls!

Here's our Top 25 for the upcoming season (click on each team to read more):

No. 25: Iowa State Cyclones

The Cyclones are in a strong position to get back to the Big 12 title game. QB Rocco Becht and RB Carson Hansen are back, though ISU will need to find someone to step up at receiver with the departures of Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins to the NFL. The defense lost its two leading tacklers but could and should be better in 2025.

No. 24: Florida Gators

This ranking is largely dependent on a healthy season from QB DJ Lagway. The QB showed flashes of brilliance in 2024 while dealing with a hamstring injury. If he can stay on the field all season, Florida has a very high ceiling despite back-to-back games at LSU and Miami as well as matchups against Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee on the schedule.

No. 23: Indiana Hoosiers

A return trip to the College Football Playoff is not out of the question for the Hoosiers. QB Fernando Mendoza arrives from Cal as his replacement and is a favorite of NFL Draft analysts. He also has two solid weapons to throw to in Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper.

Aiden Fisher is back to lead the defense after recording a team-high 118 tackles and the schedule is favorable outside of trips to Oregon and Penn State.

No. 22: South Carolina Gamecocks

LaNorris Sellers had one of the breakout seasons last year as he rushed for 674 yards and threw for 2,534 yards. Mike Shula, the former Alabama head coach, will call the plays for the Gamecocks after serving as an offensive assistant last season.

The defense may not be as great as it was a season ago. South Carolina lost six of its top seven tacklers from 2024 and will face a schedule that includes LSU, Alabama and Clemson.

No. 21: Texas A&M Aggies

Running backs Le'Veon Moss and Amari Daniels return, along with quarterback Marcel Reed. Moss was one of the most dynamic rushers in the SEC before suffering a season-ending knee injury. If Moss is close to where he was a season ago, the Aggies should have one of the best rushing attacks in the country. That will help cover for a receiving group light on weapons.

No. 20: Arizona State Sun Devils

No one is sleeping on the Sun Devils after they won the Big 12 title in 2024 in a season where hardly anyone expected them to be competitive. QB Sam Leavitt is back after a fantastic first season in Tempe with over 2,800 yards passing and 24 TDs, and the return of WR Jordyn Tyson is huge. Replacing Cam Skattebo may not be as difficult as it once seemed after the offseason arrival of former Army RB Kanye Udoh.

No. 19: Ole Miss Rebels

The Rebels reloaded with one of the top transfer classes in the country after posting at least 10 wins for the third time in the last four seasons. QB Austin Simmons is replacing Jaxson Dart as the starter and could quickly end up being one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC. He has a bevy of weapons at running back and receiver.

The defense added Princewill Umanmielen from Nebraska and other key transfers; Ole Miss was a much more competitive team a season ago thanks to its improvement on both the offensive and defensive lines.

No. 18: Kansas State Wildcats

Avery Johnson is one of the most talented running QBs in college football, but he still needs some polish as a passer. Colorado transfer Dylan Edwards is in line to start at running back; the Wildcats' leading receiver and three starters return on the offensive line. The defense needs to replace six starters, but K-State should once again be a contender in the Big 12.

No. 17: Illinois Fighting Illini

The Illini are a serious threat to make the College Football Playoff. Illinois brings back a host of starters on both sides of the ball following the school's first 10-win season since 2001.

The offense returns QB Luke Altmyer, two running backs and the entire offensive line. The only question on offense is who will step up at receiver. The defense returns its top five tacklers, including Gabe Jacas, and the Illini's schedule is extremely friendly. There's a plausible path to 11 regular-season wins and a trip to the Big Ten title game.

No. 16: Boise State Broncos

The Broncos should again be the leading candidate to represent the Group of Five in the College Football Playoff. Yes, Ashton Jeanty is gone, but the offense should be in good hands with QB Maddux Madsen returning along with four starters on the offensive line.

The defense loses a lot of pass rush juice, but the Broncos should be favored in 11 of their 12 games this season. The only time they could be an underdog is an Oct. 4 trip to Notre Dame.

No. 15: SMU Mustangs

After a first season in the ACC that avoided games against both Clemson and Miami, the Mustangs play both teams in 2025, along with Louisville. The good news is that Kevin Jennings is back at QB; the bad is they need to replace a star running back and three of their four leading receivers from last year. The defense needed to reload up front as well, but coach Rhett Lashlee stacked up on defensive line talent in the transfer portal.

No. 14: Utah Utes

After a year of sub-par quarterback play, Utah moved quickly to address the position in the transfer portal. QB Devon Dampier, who threw for over 2,700 yards and rushed for over 1,100 at New Mexico a season ago, is the new Utes starter.

Simply having a competent offense could make the Utes playoff contenders. The defense has allowed fewer than 23 points per game in each of the last six full seasons and brings back three of its four leading tacklers along with DE Logan Fano.

No. 13: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Just how much can a stellar transfer portal class and a healthy quarterback do for the Red Raiders? They're among the massive group of favorites in the Big 12 due in large part to the top portal class in the country.

Tech added edge rusher David Bailey from Stanford, DL Lee Hunter from UCF, RB Quinten Joyner from USC and 28 other players this offseason. QB Behren Morton is back after throwing for over 3,300 yards in 2024, but he did have offseason surgery. Another full season from him is key for Tech's playoff hopes.

No. 12: Oklahoma Sooners

John Mateer was really, really good at Washington State in 2024. Assuming Mateer is cleared to play after a sports betting controversy in mid-August, could he be the answer for Oklahoma in 2025? Oklahoma's offense was dreadful in 2024. OU averaged 24 points per game as Michael Hawkins replaced Jackson Arnold (now at Auburn) at QB during the season.

The defense did its part last year and allowed just 21.5 points per game and fewer than 5 yards per play. With players like R Mason Thomas (9 sacks) back, along with seven other starters, Oklahoma could be in line for a big year despite a really tough schedule if the offense is simply above average.

No. 11: Michigan Wolverines

You may sense a theme among three of the last four teams. Michigan got eight wins and beat Ohio State and Alabama to end last season despite a passing offense that was one of the worst in the country. That should change in 2025. Even if five-star freshman Bryce Underwood doesn't start right away, former Fresno State QB Mikey Keene should be a significant upgrade.

Last season's defense wasn't as good as it was in 2023, but it was still excellent. Ernest Hausmann and Jaishawn Barham are back at linebacker and Arkansas transfer TJ Metcalf could make a big impact at corner. TJ Guy will be counted on, along with Derrick Moore, to provide the edge rush. A Week 2 matchup between the Wolverines and Sooners should be fascinating.

No. 10: Miami Hurricanes

Former Georgia QB Carson Beck comes to Miami hoping to finish his college career with a flourish and also improve his NFL Draft stock. Beck was fantastic in his first year at Georgia but struggled at times in 2024, and his season ended with an elbow injury in the SEC title game. With a talented receiver in transfer CJ Daniels and an offensive line featuring potential first-round pick Francis Mauigoa, Beck should be comfortable in his new digs.

The Miami defense can't be as bad as it was in 2024. Miami gave up at least 31 points six different times in 2024 and its defensive stats were buoyed by early non-conference performances. Coach Mario Cristobal made sure to address the defense in the transfer portal.

No. 9: Alabama Crimson Tide

Kalen DeBoer's debut season at Alabama did not go as planned as the Tide stumbled to a 9-3 regular season record and just missed the expanded playoff. Lack of discipline (penalties) was a real problem for Alabama. Ty Simpson was officially declared the starting QB on Aug. 11, so he'll take the opening snap against Florida State. One thing he has going for him: Star wideout Ryan Williams, who delivered highlight-reel grabs almost weekly in his freshman season.

Finding more pass rush is key for the Crimson Tide in 2025. The good news is the defense is loaded at linebacker and on the line. A monster game looms at the end of September against Georgia; both teams should be 3-0 heading into the showdown in Athens.

No. 8: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame should be back in the playoff mix after coming oh-so-close to a national title last season. The bad news is that Riley Leonard is gone; he was clutch for the Irish in key moments during their run to the championship game. The good news is that they have two monster running backs and a very pliable schedule this season. Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price running behind a stout line should keep the Irish moving forward offensively.

There will be some turnover on the defensive line, but they should still be one of the better defenses in college football after allowing fewer than 16 points per game last season.

No. 7: LSU Tigers

What awaits the Tigers in Year 4 of the Brian Kelly experience? With a 29-11 record at the school, the longtime coach has been solid but hasn't yet lifted LSU to the playoff. Garrett Nussmeier returns at QB and will be looking to improve his NFL Draft stock with another strong receiving corps.

After five straight seasons with at least three losses, this is LSU's best chance to compete for a national title since that iconic 2019 campaign. The schedule is a gauntlet, but this team should be well-equipped to navigate it.

No. 6: Ohio State Buckeyes

Will the Buckeyes run it back and win another title this season? Or, maybe more importantly for OSU fans, will they finally beat Michigan? They'll have to do it all with a reloaded (but very talented) roster. The QB position is up for grabs between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Whoever wins out will have plenty of help with a running game featuring West Virginia transfer CJ Donaldson. Oh yeah, and they have this guy named Jeremiah Smith catching passes, so it may not matter who ends up under center.

The biggest questions come on defense, where the unit will be led by a new coordinator and needs to replace a ton of talent. All-American defensive back Caleb Downs and linebacker Sonny Styles are back on that side of the ball, but the only other returning starter is Davison Igbinosun. Can Texas exploit all the turnover in Week 1?

No. 5: Georgia Bulldogs

With Kirby Smart at the helm, the Bulldogs have been to the playoff three times in the last four years and won it all twice. They should be right back in the mix again with Gunner Stockton replacing Carson Beck at QB. They've added some talented receivers in Zachariah Branch and Noah Thomas, and a solid run game is almost a guarantee with Nate Frazier leading the way.

This is where years and years of recruiting prowess pay off. Georgia may not have a bunch of players on this year's team who casual fans know about, but there's a ton of talent across the roster and it's all but certain that stars will emerge over the course of the season. Additionally, Georgia gets to live the good side of the SEC's schedule rotation this season.

No. 4: Oregon Ducks

One year after a perfect regular season and Big Ten championship (and disappointment in the playoff), the Ducks are reloading at key positions. Dante Moore will helm the offense under center and has a talented line and backfield around him. But there are some question marks at wide receiver.

The defense had to replace several starters, and Purdue transfer Dillon Thieneman should be a stalwart centerpiece there. LB Bryce Boettcher is back after leading the team in tackles and the defensive line added transfer Bear Alexander to help out Matayo Uiagalelei, who led the Ducks with 9.5 sacks in 2024.

A friendly schedule should put Oregon in the driver's seat for a second straight Big Ten title game appearance.

No. 3: Texas Longhorns

It's Arch Manning's time to shine. After two years of spot duty as a backup, the heralded quarterback is the Heisman favorite heading into the season despite throwing fewer than 100 career passes in college football. The Longhorns lost a lot of talent at wide receiver, but Manning has shown he can use his legs if the replacements disappoint.

Coach Steve Sarkisian calls this Texas defense "the deepest and most talented that we've had." Texas gave up just over 15 points per game in 2024. If this defense is better than that one, Manning shouldn't have to put up gangbuster numbers for Texas to be a top-four CFP seed.

No. 2: Penn State Nittany Lions

We'll ask it before the season even begins: Can James Franklin win the big one? Or several big ones? Because this year's Penn State team has the talent to win a national title, but it'll surely encounter some juggernauts along the way.

Drew Allar is back at QB after a strong 2024 season and he has plenty of weapons with which to work. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen form what may be the best running back duo in the country, and Franklin got some receiver additions in the transfer portal.

The aforementioned 'big games': The Big Ten title game rematch with Oregon at home on Sept. 27 will be huge. Ohio State has bossed Penn State for much of James Franklin's tenure, so the Nov. 1 showdown in Columbus will weigh heavy on everybody in Happy Valley. The rest of the Nittany Lions' schedule is palatable, but they'll run into more heavyweights in the playoff. Can James Franklin and PSU finally deliver when the stakes are highest?

No. 1: Clemson Tigers

This is the Tigers' best shot to replicate the program's late-2010s success. This team is loaded and it doesn't have to navigate a conference schedule like many in the SEC and Big Ten.

Clemson's roster continuity should go a long way, with QB Cade Klubnik returning for his third season as the starter behind an experienced and talented offensive line. The team also brings back nine starters on defense, including TJ Parker, who had 11 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2024. He could be the top edge rusher taken in the 2026 NFL Draft with another double-digit sack season.

Head coach Dabo Swinney said in early August that it's now a race to be the first 16-0 team at the top level of college football and he believes his team can do it.

Their message came on the 80th anniversary of the ending of the war in Asia-Pacific

Kate Middleton and Prince William are marking a poignant anniversary.

The Prince and Princess of Wales broke into their summer break on Friday, Aug. 15 to issue an emotional message praising the sacrifice of the wartime generation on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Japan.

"Today, on the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, we remember the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all who served. Today we especially think of those British and Commonwealth troops who fought in the Asia-Pacific," Kate and William, both 43, wrote.

"We owe an enduring debt to the generation who gave so much, and to whom we will always be grateful."

VJ Day marks the end of WWII in Japan and the Pacific. The Japanese surrender followed the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945.

In May, the royal family, including William and Kate's three young children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, commemorated the end of the war in Europe. Then, there were parades and a flypast at Buckingham Palace.

William and Kate's message on Aug. 15 came ahead of a formal commemoration of the anniversary, where King Charles and Queen Camilla led the U.K. at a service of remembrance at the National Artboretum in Staffordshire, England.

Earlier, Charles, 76, addressed the nation, praising the ever-decreasing number of veterans and their loved ones for their service of eight decades ago. "So to the families of all those who served, and to that sadly dwindling band of veterans among us still, please know that the courage and camaraderie displayed in humanity's darkest hour is a flame that shall blaze for eternity – a beacon that honors our past and guides our future."

And conjuring up memories of his own grandfather George VI who spoke 80 years ago at the end of the war. He said, "The war is over', declared my Grandfather, King George VI, in his address to the nation and Commonwealth on V.J. Day 80 years ago today – four short words after six long years of bloodshed, fear and suffering."

"Seldom can a simple message have resonated with such a potent mix of relief, celebration, and sorrow for those who never lived to see the glow of freedom's new dawn," the message continued.

"On this day of profound remembrance, I speak to you in that same spirit of commemoration and celebration as we honor anew all those whose service and sacrifice saw the forces of liberty prevail."

He also referred to the suffering of the cities under the dropping of the first atomic bombs in the last weeks of the war.

"On this landmark anniversary, we should also pause to acknowledge that in the war's final act, an immense price was paid by the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – a price we pray no nation need ever pay again," Charles said.

"But in recalling so much suffering, we must not lose sight of how great was the cause and how sweet the victory. For those heroes of V.J. Day gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected," he added.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rejection serves as inspiration for angst and contemplation on pop singer Conan Gray's wistful fourth album, "Wishbone," out Friday. It is a return to form for Gray with 12 diaristic tracks that oscillate between bold heartbreak anthems and moments of tender reflection.

Discovered on YouTube in the early 2010s, Gray's narrative pop earned him a place among the tastemakers of Gen Z music. He collaborated closely with producer Dan Nigro (known for his work with Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan ) on his first two albums. The 26-year-old's most recent, 2024's "Found Heaven," was a departure from Nigro and the affective melancholy of his previous singer-songwriter releases. Swedish super-producer Max Martin produced many of that project's well-received 80s-inspired tracks, which saw an adaptable Gray convey big emotions through sound, rather than story.

Nigro returns as the executive producer of "Wishbone." Their reunion finds Gray comfortable but candid, as recurring characters, settings and symbols help him recount relationships atop a sonic landscape informed by his past releases.

Introduced with a trumpet's call, "Romeo" details a destabilizing heartbreak. "I took the blade into my ribs," Gray sings, taking inspiration from Shakespeare's tragedy. His voice is pitched down to an almost robotic effect on the bridge: "Where art thou? I'm all alone now," he sings. Unlike the teens pushed to violent ends in the Bard's play, Gray and his 21st century Romeo meet their demise through more relatable means: egos, emotional manipulation and miscommunication. "Guess I was just your experiment!" Gray screams at the song's midpoint, his voice cracking.

Romeo returns in "My World," which opens with a preppy drum beat. Elsewhere, "Connell" approaches the self-inflicted pain of a break up: "You remind me of how good it feels to hurt," Gray coos over strings and electric guitar, an unguarded voice replacing the angsty, spoken word cadence of "Romeo."

Many of Gray's lyrical stories are relatable, but some of the stickiest tracks are the ones that focus on his inner thoughts. The acoustic guitar and piano that start "Nauseous" is drowned out by Gray's layered vocals as it takes on his fear of love and the childhood trauma that informs it. "Caramel," with an ear-worm of a chorus set to electric guitar, describes the memories he can't shake after a breakup. The intimate "Class Clown" reflects on Gray's self-image — and how that school-born label feels relevant, still.

"Everything comes back around, I still feel like the class clown," he lilts. While Gray struggles with his place, the way he deftly tackles those feelings in song proves he's among the star pupils of his class.

Key Points -

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway took a $1.6 billion stake in UnitedHealth Group in Q2 2025, sending shares up over 9% after hours.

The stock trades near a decade-low valuation at 12 times earnings after plummeting 46% year to date amid federal probes and surging medical costs.

Wall Street analysts remain bullish despite challenges, though price targets vary widely from $198 to $700.

10 stocks we like better than UnitedHealth Group ›

Warren Buffett just made his most significant healthcare investment in 15 years, and the market is taking notice. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) revealed a new 5 million share stake in UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) worth $1.6 billion, according to Thursday's regulatory filing.

The insurance giant's stock jumped over 9% in after-hours trading on the news -- a sharp reversal for shares that had cratered 46% year to date before Buffett stepped in. Is the stock now a buy? Let's take a look to find out.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

A clock with hands that read time to buy.

The Oracle catches a falling knife

This isn't Buffett's first dance with UnitedHealth. Berkshire owned 1.18 million shares between 2006 and 2009 before selling during a broader retreat from health insurers in 2010. His return comes at UnitedHealth's darkest hour: federal investigations into Medicare billing practices, CEO Andrew Witty stepping down in May 2025 for personal reasons (replaced by Stephen Hemsley), and a disastrous Q2 earnings report that sent the stock tumbling 17% in a single day.

The company's July guidance cut painted an ugly picture. Full-year 2025 adjusted earnings expectations of at least $16.00 per share fell well short of Wall Street's hopes, while surging medical costs crushed margins at both the insurance and Optum divisions to multiyear lows. Add in the fallout from last year's massive cyberattack that impacted 192.7 million people, and you've got a stock trading at just 12 times forward earnings -- near its lowest valuation in over a decade.

But that's exactly when Buffett likes to pounce. The legendary value investor has built his fortune buying quality companies when sentiment hits rock bottom, and UnitedHealth's fundamentals remain intact despite the headlines. Revenue still grew 13% to $111.6 billion in Q2, and the company maintains its dominant position as America's largest private health insurer.

Why Wall Street is suddenly bullish

Buffett isn't alone in seeing opportunity in the wreckage. Michael Burry of The Big Short fame and David Tepper's Appaloosa Management also took positions last quarter. Wall Street analysts maintain their optimism, with 19 of 23 covering analysts rating the stock a buy, though price targets vary widely -- from a low of $198 to a high of $700, with many recent targets in the $310 to $400 range.

The bullish case rests on mean reversion. UnitedHealth's current challenges -- elevated medical costs post-pandemic, regulatory scrutiny, leadership transition -- are arguably temporary headwinds hitting a business with enduring competitive advantages. The company's vertically integrated model, combining insurance (UnitedHealthcare) with healthcare services (Optum), creates a moat that's difficult to replicate.

More importantly, the demographic tailwind remains unstoppable. An aging population guarantees growing demand for both Medicare Advantage plans and Optum's pharmacy benefit management services. The company processes 1.7 billion claims annually and serves 53 million Americans through its insurance products. That scale advantage doesn't disappear overnight.

Management is already attacking the cost problem, targeting $1 billion in savings by 2026 through AI and technology initiatives. The company's Optum division, which includes pharmacy benefits, care delivery, and data analytics, generated $226 billion in revenue last year -- a business that would rank among the Fortune 50 on its own. With Medicare Advantage margins targeted to recover to 2% to 4% and the company's massive data advantage in underwriting and care management, the path to earnings recovery seems clear, even if the timing remains uncertain.

Time to buy?

At its current valuation, UnitedHealth assumes the worst-case scenario becomes a permanent reality. That's an assumption Buffett doesn't appear to share, and one that seems overly pessimistic on its face. Savvy investors, in turn, may want to follow the Oracle's lead on this beaten-down healthcare stock.

Not much is changing

First of all, Warren Buffett will turn 95 years old on Aug. 30. Is it really that much of a surprise that he isn't going to be running Berkshire for much longer? It just seems far-fetched that the market was pricing in a more than 10% premium on the hopes Buffett would continue to defy the odds and work into his late 90s. And to be honest, I feel that there's value in an orderly succession plan like this, as opposed to expecting Buffett to simply stay at the reins until he can't do it anymore.

It's also important to point out that on Jan. 1, 2026, the first day Buffett won't be CEO, not much is going to change from a day-to-day perspective. Berkshire's 60-plus subsidiary businesses largely operate with little or no oversight already. Greg Abel, who will take over as CEO, already oversees all non-insurance operations, and Ajit Jain is Berkshire's insurance head.

The biggest immediate changes will be that different people will be in control of the company's stock portfolio, and Abel will have power over Berkshire's $344 billion cash hoard. However, portfolio managers Ted Weschler and Todd Combs have been managing more of Berkshire's investments as the years have progressed.

If anything, Berkshire should be worth more now

From a business perspective, it's tough to make the argument that Berkshire's intrinsic value is lower than it was on May 1 before Buffett made his announcement.

There are three major components of Berkshire Hathaway's business -- the cash stockpile, the operating businesses, and the stock portfolio.

First, the cash is about $3 billion lower than it was at the end of the first quarter, but that represents about 0.3% of Berkshire's market value. And in the second quarter earnings report, there was no cause for concern about the operating businesses -- in fact, everything besides insurance underwriting profits (which are lumpy over time) grew nicely.

That leaves the stock portfolio. Consider Berkshire's top stock positions and how they've performed in the months since Buffett's announcement:

Company (Ticker Symbol)

Total Return Since May 1

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)

9.9%

American Express (NYSE: AXP)

14.2%

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC)

18.3%

Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO)

(0.5%)

Chevron (NYSE: CVX)

15.4%

Moody's Corp (NYSE: MCO)

15.6%

Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY)

10.8%

Data source: CNBC. Returns as of 8/13/25.

These are all of Berkshire's stock positions with a market value of $10 billion or more and represent nearly three-fourths of the entire stock portfolio. And the average return from this group is positive-12% since Buffett announced his retirement. It's fair to say that since Buffett made his announcement, the stock portfolio has gained tens of billions of dollars in market value.

The bottom line

To be completely fair, there's an argument to be made against buying Berkshire. For one thing, management didn't buy back any shares in the second quarter, despite the plunge after Buffett's announcement, which could suggest leadership still thinks the stock isn't a compelling value.

Plus, Berkshire's operating businesses aren't bad, but they aren't exactly industry standouts in many cases. For example, GEICO recently lost its No. 2 auto insurance market share to Progressive (NYSE: PGR), and Berkshire's management has acknowledged it has fallen behind when it comes to technology.

Having said that, Berkshire is still designed to be an incredible long-term compounding machine, and a new person in the CEO office, who has essentially been Buffett's understudy for years, doesn't change that. Berkshire is already one of my largest investments, and has been for some time, but I'm likely to add shares if this price level persists.

(Reuters) -Futures tracking the Dow and the S&P 500 were higher on Friday, underpinned by expectations of an interest rate cut in September, while UnitedHealth surged after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake in the health insurer.

UnitedHealth Group gained more than 12% in premarket trading after Warren Buffett's company revealed a new investment in the health insurer, while a securities filing also showed Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management included bullish positions in the company.

Rising costs in the broader healthcare sector and an about 46% slump in heavyweight UnitedHealth's shares this year have left the blue-chip Dow lagging its Wall Street peers on the road to record highs.

This week however, the healthcare sector is the top performer on the benchmark S&P 500 and is on track for its best weekly performance in three.

Other insurers including Elevance, Centene and Molina added more that 4.4% each before the bell on Friday.

More broadly, the main U.S. stock indexes are on track for their second week of gains, buoyed by expectations that the Fed could restart its monetary policy easing cycle with a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September.

The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December and said U.S. tariffs could add to price pressures. However, recent labor market weakness and signs that tariff-induced inflation was yet to reflect in headline consumer prices have made investors confident of a potential dovish move next month.

"A 25bps rate cut is still almost fully priced in although it has put a dampener on tentative expectations that the Fed could deliver an even larger 50bps rate cut like last September," analysts at MUFG said in a note.

"Market participants are still confident that the Fed will resume rate cuts in response to weakness in the labor market and the lack of pass through so far to consumer prices from higher tariffs as evident in this week's CPI report."

At 05:38 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were up 285 points, or 0.63%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 3 points, or 0.06%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 46.5 points, or 0.19%.

Focus will now be on July retail sales data, due later in the day, and the University of Michigan's report on consumer confidence, for clues on the health of the American consumer.

Among other stocks, Applied Materials tumbled 14.8% after the chip equipment maker issued weak fourth-quarter forecasts on sluggish China demand, fueling concerns over tariff-related risks.

Shares of other chip equipment makers such as KLA and Lam Research lost 6.1% and 5.6%, respectively.

Intel rose 2.8% on the heels of a 20% gain this week after a report said the Trump administration was in talks with the struggling chipmaker for the U.S. government to potentially take a stake in the company.

On the commodities front, crude prices slipped to around $65 a barrel with attention on a meeting in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that markets hope could pave the way for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict. The meeting will take place at 1900 GMT.

CEO Daniel Snell says the best way for employees to bulletproof their jobs from the AI revolution is to get really engaged with AI.Keeproll/Getty Images -

CEO Daniel Snell has been running a management consulting and social impact company for 20 years.

Snell says that ignoring AI is the worst strategy for employees who want to protect their jobs.

Instead, he says workers have to engage with AI and align with change leaders.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Daniel Snell, a 53-year-old cofounder and CEO of Arrival, based in London. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

As efficiency starts to improve, whether driven by AI or not, underperformers will get squeezed out.

I've been running my management consulting and social impact company, Arrival, for 20 years now. Lately, I've experienced investors and business leaders hoping that AI can unlock efficiency, productivity, and performance to get organizations growing again.

Having worked with senior leaders at companies like Tesco and GSK to help develop high-performing teams, I tell my clients that putting their heads in the sand is the worst strategy when it comes to AI.

To bulletproof yourself as an employee from the AI revolution, you have to get really engaged. Don't get overwhelmed by it, and don't buy into the narrative of fear.

Daniel Snell shares strategies for employees to prove their value at work amid the AI revolution.Miranda Parry/Arrival1. Test AI for your company

Don't limit yourself to what your business is giving you or what it's doing with AI.

Run some projects, do some experiments, do some external research, and look at organizations that are using AI really well. Take those ideas to your manager and your boss and see if you're allowed to get involved. Be solution-oriented. Don't be problematic.

Think about how you can apply AI in an aligned way, immerse yourself in the executive strategy and intentions, and figure out what your company perceives as issues, opportunities, and challenges. Use that as a guide to test an AI model within your particular context and figure out how you can contribute real value.

2. Demonstrate the value of your work

Many people think that activity is productivity. Sharing lots of insights or working really hard has nothing directly to do with perceived value or productivity.

When you're doing work, make sure you're really clear on how it's valuable to the company and how it's aligned with the strategy. Don't drift into projects or roles without testing in your own mind whether this project or this team is perceived as part of the organization's future growth.

If you're not clear about that, you can easily be put into a team or department that is not valued or not valued highly enough.

3. Align yourself with leaders who are part of the change

If you align yourself with a leader, a department, a project, or a division that is not about the future of growth, you won't be visible. So, align yourself with leaders who are part of the change agenda.

It'll be crushing to realize you're not invited to the exciting conversations and you aren't among those meetings where the best talent is going. It'll be apparent. Just figure out how to get into those circles where the heat of the business is.

Bring a contribution or value based on how you're going to establish better efficiencies, productivity, performance, and how AI can drive that.

4. Skip meetings and projects that waste time

Sometimes, you get into meetings and wonder why you're there, what the purpose of the meeting is, or where it's going. In many cases, it's going nowhere.

Excuse yourself from meetings where you know there won't be a clear decision or you won't get any value. When I work with leaders, I tell them to just reject the meeting if nobody can clearly articulate what the decision is and why they're there to make it.

Often, projects are started that aren't attached to the business's core strategic focus. You can get rid of those projects, and it makes absolutely no difference. In fact, it lifts performance.

Once you figure out what projects and meetings are unnecessary, you will bring exponentially better value and be rewarded for that. But if you think lots of meetings, activities, projects, and insights are going to deliver value, then you're grossly mistaken.
